A new IMAS report sheds light on how Austria hydrates — and where perception and reality diverge. According to the study, Austrians drink an average of 2.1 liters per day, slightly below the 2.4 liters they themselves consider ideal. While 72 percent believe they consume enough fluids, one in four admits they likely fall short.
What Austria Drinks Most
Leitungswasser remains the undisputed everyday favorite.
- Tap water — 70 percent drink it several times a day.
- Coffee with milk and mineral water follow at a distance.
A majority of respondents said no to:
- Sports drinks
- Sparkling tap water
- Black coffee
- Energy drinks
- Smoothies
Only non‑alcoholic beverages were surveyed.
Why Austrians Choose Their Drinks
The strongest motives are refreshingly simple:
- Erfrischung (68% say “very important”)
- Thirst quenching (66%)
- Natural taste (57%)
Factors like sustainable production, packaging, or brand recognition play a noticeably smaller role.
When Austria Drinks
Hydration routines vary widely:
- With meals — 50 percent
- Right after waking up — 42 percent
- Based on thirst cues — 38 percent
Tools like drinking plans or apps are niche. One in five takes no specific measures to ensure adequate hydration.
